Even
after the passage of more than 10 years, the Texas Embassy Cantina remains
one of our all-time favorite projects.
It was a chance to bring a Texas-sized dollop of the bold warm colors and
wild and woolly attitude of the Texas Southwest to sometimes foggy London
while participating from the ground up in a project destined to become an
incredible success. And it was an opportunity to work with some of the best
and brightest in the business -- Dallas' own Gene Street, A. Hardcastle and
Russ Ramsland, owners of what is now arguably the most successful Mexican
restaurant outside the continental U.S.
The
three amigos gave RKD a virtually unlimited travel budget to research the
remaining examples of 19th Century Texas-Mexico style art and architecture,
and free rein to implement our vision of what a border town during the Old
Republic might have been like; not to the letter, of course, because that
would involve a lot of dust and maybe live ammunition and live horses at the
bar -- but it's certainly as close as most Londoners will ever get to the
real thing. And the result is that the place on Trafalgar Square is mobbed
virtually every night.
We are very grateful for the amount of credit the owners have given us for
its success.
Said Gene Street, "It's been a hit since day one, and the hit was due
primarily to the vision that Rex Kirby Design gave us: They worked long and
hard in putting it all together. We hope of course that the continuing success
of the Cantina rides on the food, but the design was a huge contributor to
getting folks in the door, and getting them to come back."
